New vacancies at BBM Solicitors

BBM are a small but well regarded firm with offices in the Highlands (Wick) and Edinburgh. About 75 percent of our work is insolvency/restructuring or litigation related with the remainder relating to general corporate, commercial and property work. We also have a small private client practice mainly based around the Highlands.

Our insolvency, restructuring and litigation team is led by our Managing Director, Eric Baijal. It currently comprises two directors, three associates, a solicitor and a trainee solicitor. It is assisted in some restructuring assignments from solicitors in our commercial and property team.

We act for insolvency practitioners, directors, creditors, corporates and other law firms in Scotland and elsewhere. We are consistently ranked highly in Legal 500 and Chambers and Partners; both as a team and as individuals. The team historically has been well known for contentious insolvency assignments, particularly court applications, pursuing delinquent directors, and undervalue transactions and frauds, mainly being instructed on behalf of Administrators and Liquidators. However, in recent years, we have also developed our restructuring practice which has given us the opportunity to act for a large number of non-Scottish law firms. Few firms, if any, of our size, will deal with the quality and quantity of cross-border work that we do.

The Covid pandemic is creating an increasing need for expert insolvency and restructuring advice. We expect that to continue in the medium to long term. We are therefore looking to recruit an additional team member to deal mainly with insolvency and restructuring work but also some general commercial litigation or corporate advisory as the market requires. At this stage we are less concerned with the amount of PQE but rather getting the right candidate.

Insolvency experience is in short supply in the Scottish market and we would therefore be willing to look at commercial (and possibly civil) litigators, or corporate lawyers, wishing to retrain into restructuring work. The balance of the work is likely to be contentious but there is scope for the right candidate to grow the non-contentious practice.

As well as knowledge of Scots Private Law, the ideal candidate will have excellent academics and communication skills. They will be confident both in business development and in dealing with clients. We are currently working remotely but in due course the ideal candidate will need to be able to attend one or other of our offices on a regular basis as business requires. Competitive salary and work life balance (sensible chargeable hours and billing targets) are on offer.
